The Sokołowsko Sanatorium, was established 1855 as a worldwide pioneering facility for the treatment of tuberculosis and later other lung problems. Unfortunately the building was burnt down in 2005.

First Lesser horseshoe and Greater mouse-eared bats come back to the renovated buildings. Refurbished roofs, platforms preventing damage to the constructions by guano, different microhabitat improvements, assure at least several dozen year perspective for the thriving of bats.

Winter steps back even in the mountains, so one can expect the bats returning from their hibernation sites soon. This season’s last two renovations of the bat summer colony buildings have been just finished. Renovations can be resumed only in Autumn, when the groups of females and their offspring leave the warm attics.

The Orthodox parish in the village of Kunkowa (100km SE of Kraków) renovates the church, inhabited by a colony of the Lesser horseshoe bat. The shelter is important for the Natura2000 site Ostoje Nietoperzy Powiatu Gorlickiego(PLH120094) established to protect bats in the Gorlice County.

Bat life convenience improves. Improvements in several, out of planned 40, bat summer roosts are going on. The buildings hosting Lesser horseshoe, Geoffroy’s and Greater mouse-eared bats’ colonies will be improved, in order to provide better living conditions for these animals.

Feb 9-11, 2015, part of the project team had an opportunity to visit UK-based, Vincent Wildlife Trust, for many years working for the protection of the Lesser horseshoe bat. The choice of place to visit, the Usk River valley near Brecon, was not random.

It is the time of winter monitoring of the bats. As last year we check known places where those mammals hibernate. Bats are quite strongly attached to their winter hiding places, that’s why it’s easier to asses condition of the population in the winter.

The St Nicklaus church in Tylmanowa was the second object with its roof renovated within the LIFE Podkowiec+ project. The breeding colony of the lesser horseshoe bats can feel safe under the new roofing for another several dozen years.

The renovation of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s church in Nowosielce has been completed. It secures the breeding colony of greater mouse-eared bat. The roof structure and roofing were changed by the requirements of bats’ colony.
