Winter steps back even in the mountains, so one can expect the bats returning from their hibernation sites soon. This season’s last two renovations of the bat summer colony buildings have been just finished. Renovations can be resumed only in Autumn, when the groups of females and their offspring leave the warm attics.

The church of the Birth of the Holy Mary in the Jazowsko village on Dunajec river (S Poland) is inhabited by three species of bats listed by the Habitat Directive. That’s why it was included into the PODKOWIEC+ project and renovated.
Jazowsko is an enclave of the Natura 2000 site that is major for the Lesser horseshoe and Whiskered bats in Poland, Ostoje Nietoperzy Beskidu Wyspowego (PLH120052).
April, 21st, representatives of the Regional Director for Environment in Kraków, Małopolskie Voivodship Historic Monuments Conservator, local parish, construction supervisors, contractor, and PTPP “pro Natura” met for the assessment of the work effects. The church had the roofing replaced. A special platform for the collection of guano was installed at the attic to prevent damage, that larger quantity of excrements might do to the construction. The assessment of technical, historic and nature conservation aspects was very positive.
Despite some late winter charges, the renovation work in the Łaskawy Kamień Lime-kiln in Stara Morawa (SW Poland) has also been finished on scheduled time. Replacement of the roofing will assure quiet and weather-proof conditions to the breeding colonies of Lesser horseshoe and Greater mouse-eared bats.

The assessment team representing the Dolnośląskie Voivodship Historic Monument Conservator, contractor, investor, construction supervisor, and PTPP “pro Natura” agreed that the work was done more than properly and approved the job.

Now, we just need to wait for the bats’ return from Winter grounds.
