Two castles once hanged over the Sachsenburg, the lower (untere) and the upper (obere), both now ruined.
From the lower castle, there are some remnants of the defence walls left. The four-storey tower, planned on the square of 8x8m, has been renovated by a local group of an association, whose mission is renovation of old castles. Local organisation, lead by Mrs Doris Röse, manages the tower and set up a nice exhibition about history of the place and nature in the surroundings. Majority of the exhibits and information has been supplied by Mr Norbert Röse, husband of Ms Chairman, retired barber, whose interest lies in nature and photography. With special focus on orchids and bats. We had a pleasure to write in the visitors’ book as the first international group since the opening of the exhibition 5 years ago.

Near the tower the local chiropteroligists often mist-net the bats. The evening of the visit, bats of 4 different species fell into the nets, so the participants could meet them face-to-face.
Nearby, on a small lake, there is another mist-netting site, and one of the 13 field information points about bats. Here, over the water bats forage readily, feeding on small insects, mosquitoes and chironomids. The stand comprise information plate titled “Mosquitoes? Delicious!”, and ultrasound detector, that makes it possible to hear the hunting bats while they fly above the water.
