The Regional Museum has a very interesting exhibition of the Thuringia’s bat life. Elements related to bats have also been placed across all the exhibitions in the museum, like, for instance, a showcase with bat depicting stamps placed in the post office room.
Certainly, traditional in museums, “No touch” rule was not applied here. Many of the presentations required visitor’s action, solving a quest, looking at the backside of little windows for pictures and explanations. Opening of thematic drawers with appropriate items was not only inspiring, but also allowed for better use of limited space. Visitors were attracted to the stand for checking of individual hearing range of sound frequencies. Dark chamber with blinking light helped to understand the intermittent orientation characteristic to echolocation.
One of the attractions was live broadcast for a bat colony located in a church, about 10km away from the museum. Besides high-tech solutions, there was many simple items, such as bat origami, simple puzzles and quests.
The Museum lends a bat rucksack containing among others an ultrasonic detector. It organises also special events like the Bat Night or guided bat walks.
The exhibition extents beyond the Museum, and there are field stations in the surroundings, mentioned in the other parts of this report from the Kyffhäuserkreis, district in Northern Thuringia.
