New Year’s competition resolved
The contest asked for the number of the Geoffroy's bats on the attached photograph (below).
WHen the bats sit close to each other, their furs compose a carpet where it is difficult to determine the border between specimens. Even on a qulaity photograph it is difficult to count the crowded animals.
One of the solutions is to count their easy-to-tell body parts. Ears and eyes are easy to see. But as they are paired, there is always a danger to count a bat twice. That's why the profis count the onefold body parts, such as the nose, as the nostrils are well visible. A tested method is marking the noses that were already counted with a dot.
With this method, the bat number on the picture was estimated at 601 specimen. The answers that were closest to this result will be awarded with the project gadgets.
The result nearest to the official count was submitted by Anna Brzostowska (655), Alena Musilová (700) and Roman Osika (600) who ex aequo receive the main prize - T-shirt promoting the Land of the horseshoe bats along with some other small gadgets. Recognition (small gadgets in the amount depending on the rank) receive: Michał Miklas, Justyna Adamus, Maurycy Ignaczak, Piotr Pusz, Regina Wyrozumska, Nikoletta Kula, Ewa Zuber, Helena Tutka, Anna Pawełczyk, Katerina Nemcova, Grzegorz Tworek, Bohumila Necasova.
