The Greater mouse-eared bat is rare and endangered at a level justifying not only forbidding their persecution or harm but requiring active conservation measures.
In the Nawojowa Parish church, in the heart of the Horseshoe Land, a colony of these bats found their shelter. Our largest bats are still small and the whole colony weighs slightly above 1 kilogramme, so their presence in the attic is almost unnoticeable. It makes it easy to unintentionally harm these sympathetic animals.
To prevent any such events, their habitat in the church attic was adapted appropriately. The existing and new-built passes between different chambers were marked, large window was covered to extend the dark sector of the attic. Under the roof, a small room collecting warm air moving upwards, and free of any draughts created an additional shelter for bats to choose on cooler days or whenever they feel it a better place for them to hang.
