Nowadays we execute LIFE PODKOWIEC+ project. But we intervene whenever bats need our help for many years. Animals which landed in a dangerous position are found and reported by kind people. And then we help bats as much as we can. Interventions happen whole year. Residents report bats stuck in the gutters, in the stairwells or flats, attacked by birds and cats on the ground or just lying defenceless on the pavement. The intervention on Monday (1st of December) was unusual. Help of our specialists was asked for by an army unit from Wrocław. During cutting trees, workers came across bats hibernating in the hollow in one of the trees. It turned out those were common noctules. Thanks to quick reaction and calling our Society, we have been able to save most of the bats: 50 common noctules are in good condition, three are injured, but there is big chance they will came back to natural environment. Two bats will need constant care. Bats have been removed from military area and positioned in safe place, where they can continue to hibernate. Member of our Society takes care of them. Thanks to quick and proper actions of army unit, harmed animals have a chance to survive. There is a silhouette of the bat in the badge of the 31st Radio engineering Battalion, apparently for a reason. We appreciate their proper actions and help in rescue operation. Running bat conservation projects, we already experienced cooperation with the Polish Army – 1st Brzesk Sappers Regiment helped us to protect bat hibernation sites in old mines and bunkers.
