In the South śląskie voivodship, in the Cieszyn district, lies one of the smaller Natura 2000 sites, “Kościół w Górkach Wielkich” (Church in the Górki Wielkie, PLH240008).
The church attic and the tower are inhabited by the Greater mouse-eared and Lesser horseshoe bats. Both species are protected by the EU Habitat Directive, and included into the LIFE Podkowiec+ project.
Over 200 Greater mouse-eared bats, each fed with the good numnber of beetles, and about 100 horseshoes, leave their deposit, layerafter layer of guano. Before it dries, new portion covers the accumulated heaps, which may cause humidification of the wooden construction and the walls and ceiling of the building. Standard solution applied in such situations is installation of speical platform, covered with plastic sheets, easing up the cleaning operations.
Such a platfor has been just placed in the All Saints Church in Górki Wielkie. It is the fourth such construction in the LIFE Podkowiec+ project.
