The old school building in Wojkowa, now serves two main groups of visitors. It is a village centre for the people and its attic is inhabited by the breeding colony of up to 60 Lesser horseshoe bat females. Such coexistence is assured thanks to strict separation of the living space between the two kinds of users. The bats were granted allotment for the attic part. Thanks to their presence in the building the roof was renovated, already before the Podkowiec+ project. Later, thanks to the LIFE funding, the attic was equipped with some measures to improve and diversify the temperature conditions. These were: trapping the warm air between a pair of triangle panels mounted at the top of the roof, and a chamber with an inlet from the bottom up, and the walls sloping inwards, hoping to prevent predator access.
Now, the third phase of the works has been finished. Special guano collecting platform is ready for the bats’ come back to the roost after winter.
All the work has been made for bats, but obviously it serves also the users of the lower floor, preventing inundation of rain water and impact of bat excrements.
