Commuting between their day roosts and feeding grounds they prefer to do along the rows of trees or hedges. This gives them a better orientation in the local geography and hide from the raptors. That’s why the PODKOWIEC+ project contains also management of the plant structure around colonies.
This led to an exchange of experience with other nature conservation projects. June. 17th, the meeting with Foundation for EcoDevelopment (FER) staff of the Roads for Nature project also funded by the EU LIFE mechanism. http The FER project takes care for the road alleys, and provides training on their maintenance and role as ecological corridors, publication of manuals, and run appropriate local campaigns in several dozen municipalities across Poland. Our team learned from the colleagues about their experience and problems encountered at implementation stage of the project.
Our team shared their knowledge on the Lesser horseshoe bat biology and the role of the ecological corridors in their life.
Trees and hedgerows play extremely important role in the life of the Lesser horsehoe bats. Bats of this species catch their insect prey flying skilfully among the tree crowns, doing well even in quite dense forest.
